Urban driving in Europe is changing rapidly. Commuters are trading heavy SUVs for tiny, battery-powered alternatives. The Citroën Ami and Fiat Topolino have starting prices hovering around €8,000 to €9,000 (roughly $8,700 to $9,800). Many buyers do not even purchase them outright. Dealerships offer long-term leases for as little as €30 to €40 a month after a modest initial down payment.
There is another massive advantage driving the sales of these tiny vehicles. It is much more capable, offering a top speed of 55 mph and a larger 10.5 kWh battery option that provides up to 110 miles of range. However, it is also much more expensive, starting around €15,000.
- Renault Mobilize Duo: Renault was actually a pioneer in this space with the Twizy over a decade ago. Their new Mobilize Duo offers tandem seating (the passenger sits directly behind the driver) and features doors that open upward to save even more space in tight parking spots.
- XEV Yoyo: This Italian-Chinese microcar focuses on a brilliant solution for apartment dwellers. It features swappable batteries. If you cannot plug the car in, you can pull into a dedicated station and swap your depleted battery for a fully charged one in under three minutes.
